Happy Summer Feet: Keep the whole family safe and healthy this summer with these simple foot care ti
Sun Block
Your feet are probably the last place you think to apply sunblock, but like any other area it is prone to sunburn. Remember to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on your feet, including the bottom of your feet and between the toes.
Sweaty Feet
With all this hot weather you will undoubtedly be sweating more. For your feet, this means you can be more prone to infections such as athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and fungal nail infections. Be sure to dry well between the toes after bathing, use an antiperspirant on your feet, and airing out shoes after wearing them can prevent bacteria growth. If possible avoid wearing the shoes two days in a row.
Jandals
Despite being a Kiwi icon, jandals are perhaps the worst footwear out there. They provide no support, and cause strain as your toes struggle to stay in the shoe. But if you are heading to the beach, you will need something to protect the soles of your feet from the burning sand. Try to opt for a sandal that provides proper support for your feet. See the below post for tips on how to judge footwear quality.
Wear Shoes
Barefoot walking leaves you prone to injuries, infections, aches and pain and skin disorders. However many foot problems also arise from ill-fitting footwear! When choosing a new pair shoes ask yourself the following questions:
Does this shoe have laces/buckles or straps to hold my feet securely?
Does this shoe have a well padded sole?
Is this shoe the same shape as my feet? Will they adequately support my individual needs? eg. Are they wide enough or have enough arch support?
Is this shoes made out of material that breathes?
Do I have enough space between my and the end of the shoes?
Does this shoe have a strong structure? A good shoe should pass the bend test: the more it bends in your hand , the less supportive it is.
When buying shoes ask for help if you are unsure whether a shoe is suitable for you. Feel free talk to your podiatrist about their favorite shoe stores
